Professional organizing as a business idea may not seem that new or unique, but the demand for different types of organization today does offer unique opportunities to establish and/or service various niches within this industry.
With the popularity of shows like Clean House and Mission Organization, more and more people are realizing they could use the assistance of a professional organizer.
And for someone with a knack for organization, now is the perfect time to spread your entrepreneurial wings.
This is one of those service business ideas that costs little investment to start, and you can start your business in a matter of weeks.
You can even get started without any education or certification, just having a knack for organization, creativity and people-pleasing skills will get on your way to a rewarding career.
But to boost your confidence and skills it helps to get some training, and you’ll find many inexpensive resources available online to help you do just that.
I especially recommend the FabJob Guide featured on this page. FabJob Guides are highly recommended in national women’s magazines and other credible sources, and have even been seen in movies and on TV.
Now as you are training and educating yourself, begin practicing by asking friends and family members if you can help them with any organizational issues.
This is great way to get some experience and references.
And then when you are ready to start marketing your services it would also be a good idea to get certified with
Certified Professional Organizers,
to help you and your business gain credibility.
Keeping up to date with the happenings in your profession is also a must, so joining the
National Association of Professional Organizers
should be high on your list of priorities if you are serious about this business idea.
Now as I mentioned above, the beauty of this profession is that there are so many variations to it, and you can service many different types of organizational niches besides basic whole house or office organizing.
For example, there are people who specialize in only doing garage organization. This is a great niche for a guy who has an organizational bent, and would love to get paid to play with tools all day.
Another area of specialization is for families getting ready to put their house on the market.
You would help sellers make their home look appealing to potential buyers by removing clutter, straightening closets and rearranging storage rooms.
And you could advise them on packing strategies so as to make the unpacking less stressful.
This would be a great add-on to a home-staging business. You could also train in
space clearing.
Space clearing is not only beneficial for any home, but it’s especially helpful for home sellers as it helps homes sell faster.
Are you more of a paper-pushing person? You'd be surprised at the number of individuals who don't have an organized way to store and retrieve important documents like insurance policies, passports, and wills.
And there is even a demand for experts who specialize in “paperless” offices.
Organizing and storing cherished family photos and memories is another area to be addressed here.
I also found other searches for specific room tips such as bedroom, craft room and music library.
And these are just some of the terms I saved, there were multiple variations on the same terms and so these numbers are actually just a smaller sampling of how many people are looking for organizational help each day.
The article will also give you some ideas for community education classes, news articles and more that you can use to get exposure for your business.
Professional organization is a fun and fulfilling business idea for the right person.
As I mentioned in my
About Me Page,
there are a number of different business ideas I would love to be able to try if I had the time or multiple clones of myself, and professional organization is one of them.
I love sorting, filing and organizing, and there is nothing more satisfying sometimes than to turn chaos into order, along with the feeling that comes from letting go of stuff that is no longer needed or serving a purpose in your life.
And this brings me to another area of skill that is needed with this business – and could also be a form of specialization too.
Professional organizers (and people who would have the talent and personality for this type of profession) are the types of people who can’t wait to get their hands on your stuff.
Then they can organize it, get rid of the clutter and help you lighten the load. It’s almost a mission really, and a very fulfilling occupation.
Now if you watch some of the home organization shows like Clean House (my favorite TV show), and you are this type of person, you probably cannot fathom how people can be so attached to their belongings, as is seen regularly on the show.
But if you can empathize, and perhaps have a knack with helping people work through the psychological and emotional reasons why they are unwilling to let things go, you could add a special skill as a “clutter psychologist” to your arsenal of services.
Helping people break the connection to the past and to things is definitely a skill and an art, and you probably won’t be able to bribe them with a whole new suite of living room furniture as they do on the show.
So this is definitely an area to work on, and if you are good at it, be sure to use it as part of your marketing strategy.
As a professional organizer, you will do more than simply de-clutter and rearrange.
The true benefit you are offering is reduced stress, and a feeling of security in knowing that everything is in its place.
Perhaps you can even motivate your clients to live a more manageable lifestyle, and to let go of the past and enjoy the harmony and peace of their newly organized and clutter free life.
