Freelance Writing

Learning the Ins and Outs of Freelance Writing
(Writing/Editing)

As more and more people turn to home-based businesses, both to supplement their income and as a primary source of income, writing, particularly freelance writing will become an ever more popular choice. It is not as simple putting pen to paper, however, and there is plenty of competition in the field, so it important that the prospective freelancer knows the business and what will give them the edge above the others in the marketplace.

Give the Clients What They Want, and the Clients Will Always Want You

In the world of freelance writing, there are several types of assignments that can be had. Each assignment will have different rates of pay, and the beginner may be left with the smaller paying projects. However, anyone who has a degree or expertise in a certain field will have an edge, which may put them in bigger demand. Once the writer is established with a particular client, they will either get bigger pay per project or more steady work. Some writers may be able to settle in with a few clients, working a few hours each day for each one.

For certain types of projects, like technical reports and other, more detailed writing assignments, a certain level of education and experience will be needed before an assignment is given.

Know Where the Major Writing Market Is

In addition to learning how to get an assignment, you need to learn where to find them. The best paying writing assignments are sometimes posted on a number of websites which have not only writing jobs but other creative based jobs as well, such as photography and graphic design. Some of these sites require a paid membership while others allow a free profile to be posted. It important for the beginner to post a profile to several sites, but be wary of trying to “pad” your writing credentials and resume or you may find yourself writing over your head fairly quickly.

There are certain areas that need the most writers and are continually seeking new talent - perfect for the beginner to gain experience and knowledge. Of these, SEO-based writing and web content are two of the biggest areas. In addition, writing based on internet marketing and similar topics is also in great demand.

Most of the writing that you do this way will be ghostwriting, meaning that your name will never be included on the articles and other items that you create, but as you continue to gain skills and knowledge, you may be able to get assignments that will give you the credit that you desire. Some writers will do both: write as a freelance writer, taking assignments wherever they find them on a variety of topics for pay, all the while seeking editors or publishers for their more creative, credited work on the side.

To get started, you do not necessarily need any writing credit, however, that will give you the edge. You do need good English and grammar skills and the ability to follow directions.
