While there are certainly any number of greeting cards in the stores and even along the counters of some convenience marts, there are those who prefer to have more personalized and edgier fare than what they can find there. Some of these people may use the basic card making software and the items in the craft stores to knock out one or two every now and then but most will either feel they are not getting the look that they want or will grow tired of the whole process. Creating greeting cards at home can be a good small business opportunity that does not require specialized training or a lot of equipment.
Finding a Niche
Obviously, you will not be able to market your greeting cards to the larger stores and shops because they will already have their own huge selection. However, there are other boutiques and small shops that you may be able to get your cards into as a perfect tie in item to the goods that are sold there. For instance, there are craft shops or florists and even specialty candle shops that can be an excellent place to market your specially designed and created greeting cards. Some shops will sell your goods for a specified price while others will charge you a percentage of the profits that you make each week or month.
Tie Into the Local Economy
One of the best things about buying a greeting card from these small shops is the ability to get a unique voice that is not found in the corporate cards that line the big box retailer’s shelves. If you want the same old thing, you shop there. If you want something that says a certain area, then you shop in smaller, out of the way places, looking for examples of local flavor and culture. Tie in your greeting cards with the area’s claims to fame and you will find yourself with a following, potentially getting customers the world over including uprooted locals who have left because they are in the military or another career that has led them away from their hometown. If you live near a college town, you can add in those types of details to the cards you create, which will further increase your potential target market.
Look around the area and use those natural details. For instance, if there are dogwood trees as far as the eye can see every spring, then add the dogwood blossoms to cards in the spring time.
Go the Extra Mile
If you are making something that people can make at home, you have to go that extra step, paying attention to every small detail. Every card that you create has to be perfect, no matter what. If you are adding details such as found items and the like, it is also important to make sure that you are adhering these with adhesives that will let them stay on through the trip in and out of the envelope but dry clear and free of lumps. Remember; the better your cards are, the more likely people will be to actually seek them out when they need another.
