Building an online business with internet marketing is one of the most popular small businesses to start.

The benefits are pretty unbeatable, being able to work from home, and having the potential for unlimited income from your website building enterprises.

But building a website is one thing, knowing how to make money with a website is something else.

And asking yourself the question “how do websites make money?” is very smart.

Because if you don’t have a plan for how you are going to monetize your website, than you are not going to get off on a very good start in your internet marketing endeavor.

So lets look at 10 possible ways to make money with a website, and you will see that at least one or more will fit any type of online business you want to build.

10 Ways To Make Money With A Website

1. Ads and Adspace. This is probably the number one way that you can make money with a website, and this is normally done on information and content sharing websites.

You have probably noticed the little boxes of ads on the pages of websites you have visited, (including this one) that say “Ads by Google”.

This is a form of Adspace advertising.

The website owner provides the valuable internet real estate, and then uses some of that real estate to show ads from related businesses.

And the website owner makes money when someone clicks on one of those ads.

This is simply the easiest way to make money with a website, there is nothing to sell, no customer service involved, simply hassle free income.

Now there are other ad networks besides Google Adsense such as Kontera and Info Links, and you are not limited to just these types of ads.

If you build a website that is targeted to a more local audience such as a community based website, then you could sell ad space to local businesses in your area.

This means a little more is involved, you have to make contact with the businesses and sell the adspace, along with billing and processing the payments.

But it’s still a great way to build income if you have a quality website that will provide your visitors what they are looking for, and also provides the businesses that advertise with you good exposure to targeted potential customers.

But, there is a catch – you have to have that valuable real estate first.

And this means building a website that provides quality content and information that attracts visitors.

These visitors will first of all want to read your information, and then perhaps click on an ad they find might provide more relevant information that they are searching for.

And the recommended articles and info on the Internet Business Ideas Page will give you all the information you need to know about building your own valuable piece of real estate on the internet.

2. Referral Income. This is a popular way of creating income from a travel based site, it’s not limited to this type of niche only, but we’ll use it as an example.

Now let’s say you have built a quality website about your hometown's great vacation destinations.

You live in a beautiful seaport town with lots of fishing and sailing charter businesses.

First you build your great website with lots of quality content about all the great things to do and see in your hometown.

Next you partner with some fishing and sailing charter businesses that you know you can wholeheartedly recommend because they provide quality service and experiences.

You then write a good review of these services on your website, along with providing a reservation service for the charter company.

When someone books a charter through your website, you collect a deposit, which will essentially be the referral fee you worked out with the charter company.

You then book the date with the charter company, giving them all the relevant info and your work is done.

You get to keep the small deposit as your referral fee, and the person that booked the charter pays the charter company the remaining balance per the terms of the charter company’s services.

It will be up to the charter company to follow up with your referral and collect the rest of their fee, either in increments, or when the people come for their trip.

You of course need to make allowances for refunds of the deposits within a certain time frame if your party cancels, but otherwise this is a very simple and effective way to earn money from a niche such as a travel based site.

You can also make referral income from hotel bookings by using affiliate partnerships with larger booking companies such as Expedia, and you can use both types on your site.

But the local referrals give your site much more credibility than using a lot of national affiliate links, and are much more likely to bring you steady income too.

3. E-commerce Store. Building an online e-commerce business simply means that you are building a store on the internet.

The benefits to this of course are that you have global marketplace to sell to, and are not limited to just your local area, although you can certainly target both.

But what are you going to sell in your e-commerce store?

And more importantly, how are you going to get people to come visit your store in the first place?

Well, if you have been doing any research into internet marketing you know about the importance of finding a niche. And this is true with an e-commerce site too.

You don’t just want to throw up a department store on the internet.

It’s better to find some small under served niche of goods that you can source, that have a demand and that you would enjoy selling.

And you can create an e-commerce store to sell your own goods too.

Perhaps you have a small manufacturing business, are an artist or craftsperson, or have some ebooks or printed books you want to market.

These are all candidates for an online store, and the more you know about the goods you are selling the more credible and knowledgeable you will be to your potential clients.

This will help your e-commerce business grow and also build customer loyalty and repeat business.

But you have to build your e-commerce website correctly, including knowing how to build it so you attract traffic to your store.

And the best information I can recommend on how to learn to do this right is the article I'm Terribly Sorry... from SBI.

This article will give you all the info you need to get you started off on the right foot in building a successful e-commerce business.
