Pet Photography

Picture “Purr”fect Pets!

Start your own pet photography business!

If you have a camera and a computer with a printer, you can start your own business! Even though it seems like everyone has a digital camera these days, many people still like to have professional photographers doing portraits for them, especially when those portraits are of children or pets.

To many people, their pets are their children. You may be surprised to find the number of people who carry around pictures of their pets in their purses or wallets. You can be the person taking those pictures, and making money doing it!

Pet Photography This is a relatively easy business to set up, and you can make your house your home-base. Of course, you will have to travel to your clients’ homes for portrait work. Many photographers have studios set up in their homes, but this is not at all necessary for pet photography.

Pets can be persnickety and nervous, and often misbehave when in strange situations, such as photography studios. You can advertise the fact that you will photograph the animal in their own environment. This will put your clients at ease, knowing that they will not have to put any undue stress on their beloved pets.

Or, if your client has a special place they like to take their pets for walks, you can meet them there for the appointment. In either situation, at home or in an outdoor setting, make sure that you take the time to play with and get to know the animal. This will help the pet to be less nervous of you, and you may get some personality hints that you can bring out later in photos.

Nowadays, printing photos is becoming easier and much less expensive. In fact, if you have a photo-quality printer, you can do your own developing right at home. This saves you money, and you can pass along these savings to your clients through lower prices and package deals. You may want to consider getting a good photo-editing program, such as PhotoShop.

Don’t be like a lot of portrait studios that make their clients buy expensive packages just for that one shot they love. Offer special rates for single photographs, and even better rates if your clients are interested in getting package deals. The more accommodating you are, the more apt your clients will be to recommend you to others.

This is not a seasonal business, but there are all kinds of things you can do during the holiday season to bring in extra business. Make arrangements to set up at a local mall or market, have a friend dress up as Santa Clause, and offer Pet Portraits with Santa! Just take your computer and printer with you, and you can print them on the spot. You will want to purchase some cardboard frames, or holiday cards that the photos can be inserted into.

So, if you love animals, and love to take pictures, the pet photography business nay be for you, what are you waiting for? There are all kinds of adorable furry mugs out there just waiting to pose for you.
