The whole idea of being a work at home mom has taken on a life of its own, and even has its own acronym now – WAHM!

And this is happening for good reason; many moms would prefer to stay home with their children instead of putting them in day care and going off to work each day.

But the financial realities of our time make this quite hard to accomplish for most families.

One of the misconceptions of working from home is thinking that it will be easier than working outside of the home.

Certainly it’s true that having the flexibility to work from home means no commute and you can work your own hours around the needs of your family.

But working from home with children can be difficult, demanding and exhausting.

It takes a lot of energy and stamina, especially if you have younger children and babies. If you are staying up with a young baby, or your child gets sick, the exhaustion of just coping with these demands can derail your efforts to work on your business.

When thinking about what kind of business you want to start, the needs and ages of your children are definitely things to take into consideration.

It might be best to choose a business that does not require you to schedule any services, instead perhaps something like selling on eBay, or starting an online business would be better.

These are the types of businesses that are completely flexible, you can work on them anytime day or night.

And despite the distractions of a three year old tugging at your knee for attention while you are trying to work, most moms feel that the benefits of trying to work from home still outweigh the demands of organizing and scheduling work time around family needs.

When you think of the obvious advantages of being a work at home mom, being there when your child needs you, especially when they are sick, it really does seem like a no-brainer to put your efforts into building a home based business.

You get to be there for all of their milestones.

You get to watch them leave on the bus, and be there at the bus stop when they return. You get to be there when they need help with their homework, or to talk about their day.

It's simply a matter of organizing both work and family time together - making a schedule for both. And it takes good time management and communication.

Now lets look at some of the traits of a successful work at home mom.

You will of course need persistence, determination and the ability and desire to put some hard work into your business.

But you will also need some business sense, good time management and organizational skills, and support from your spouse and other family and friends.

Now I feel just being a mom and managing a household probably gives you all the skills you need, but you should look at these areas and be sure you have what you need to make your business venture a success.

Once you are ready to get started you should consider holding a family meeting if your children are old enough to understand what you want to do and to enlist their support.

You need to start out with good communication with your family.

Answer any questions your family may have, and make sure you let them know that when you are working they need to resist the urge to interrupt you.

If you have already made a schedule of when you will be working during the day, explain it to them and maybe post it somewhere where everyone can see it everyday.

So now you are ready to take the leap, and you need to choose what you want to do if you haven't already. If you haven't, this could be the hardest part. Start brainstorming about what you could do.

What are your hobbies, work experience, etc.?

But most of all, what do you really love to do?

That is what you should create a work at home career from - what you love to do.

Some days will be tough, but if you choose a business idea that you truly love to do, it can seem like getting paid for something you would want to be doing anyway.
